Camp! May 4, 2008

A couple of weeks ago my class and Room 7 went on camp. We went to Ohope which I think is about 2 hours from Te Awamutu. First of all we arrived at school, and when everyone was here we departed for our stay at Ohope. On our way there we stopped at Lake Okataina for lunch. The wind was so cold there. It was freezing! Once we arrived at Ohope Christian Camp we got our cabins all sorted out. Then we went to the Whakatane Aquatics Centre where the Hydroslide was booked. After that we came back to our camp, had dinner and went to bed.
Day 1
The next day our class went to the High Ropes and The Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maize. When we were at the High Ropes it was really fun but scary too! To start with we all had to get into groups and do some trust activities. Some of the trust activities included us jumping onto platforms by swinging to each one with a rope, and we couldn’t touch the ground. Another one of them was that we had to get into pairs and one of us had to wear a blindfold and follow the instructions that our partner told us. After a few more activities we were finally able to go onto the High Ropes. The High Ropes were really high up from the ground and looked scary. There were a lot of different types of challenges on the High Ropes. The challenge I did was that I had two ropes to hold onto one on each side of me and I had to walk on a really thin rope. I was going really slowly, because I was scared if I fell off. But we were all wearing a harness so I had nothing to worry about. I also had to walk backwards on the rope. Once I had finished doing my challenge I was really happy. I knew I had achieved something big. I’ve never done anything like it in my life before. Next we went to the Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maze. That was fun. At the Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maze we all had to stay in our transport groups and we all got a piece of paper which had questions on it. In the Maze we had to find the right answer that went with the right question. Along with that we also had to find some kiwiana pictures. At the Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maze there was also a Haunted House which we were trying to find. When we found it there wasn’t much there except for a window that you had to lift up and you could see that there were chopped up pieces of a human there. But the good thing is they weren’t real. The first team to answer all of the questions and get all of the pictures right won. Unfortunately it wasn’t us. It was the boys who won. We had to surrender because Kaitlyn said she couldn’t be bothered doing it because someone had already won. In the end we eventually found our way back out of the maze. At the end of the day we went back home and then we went to the Whakatane Aquatics Centre. When we arrived back at home we had dinner and went straight to bed.
Day 2
On day 2 Room 3 and Room 7 swapped activities. Room 7 went to the High Ropes and the Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maze. And Room 3 went Kayaking, Fishing, and went to Shelly Bay. Originally I was in Kaitlyn’s group but then I had to go into Holly’s group for one of the activities because I couldn’t go kayaking with my group, because there was one kayak less. So I went fishing and I caught two fish I think. At first I felt a fish pull on my line so I pulled it up, but guess what! The fish was on my hook then it fell off and went to Briar’s hook so she caught the fish. A while later I felt another fish pull on my line so I pulled it up, and this time the fish ate my bait and accidentally got hooked onto Lizzie’s hook as well as mine, and then it went off mine and stayed on Lizzie’s hook, so she caught that fish. I was a bit upset about it but I didn’t mind. Finally I caught a fish which was a bit like the one Holly caught. I was so happy. Later I caught another fish which was big. After that I got back with my original group and then we went to Shelly Bay. That was SO TIRING! There were three hundred and someting steps which was a lot. We had to walk round to the other side of the beach and walk back which makes six hundred and something steps. After a long and tiring walk I finally got to go Kayaking with Mrs Crowe’s group. I had never been kayaking before and that was my first time. To start with I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it but in the end I did. My arms were really sore and I wanted to stop. But I didn’t. Instead I kept going and I did the best that I could, which I think was really good for my first time. At last we all got back to Ohope Christian Camp. Then we all got ready to go to the Awakeri Hot Pools. I really liked it there. The water was so warm, I didn’t feel like getting out. At the Awakeri Hot Pools Room 7 and our class had a barbeque there. That was yum. For those of us who wanted to have dessert when we got back were allowed to. All of us were so tired that we went straight to our cabins and went to sleep.
Day 3
Finally the time had come. Everyone had to pack their bags and get ready to go back home. On the way back home we stopped at Te Puke where we had lunch. Some of us had money and we were allowed to buy our lunch then. Most of us bought Subway and so did I. It was a long trip back home and we all had lots of fun. When we arrived back at school we unloaded all our gear and collected. Then we headed back home.
I had a great time at camp! One of my lowlights would have to be the walk to Shelly Bay. I was really tired. My highlights would have to be the High Ropes and The Amazing Maize ‘n’ Maze. I also really liked the Awakeri Hot Pools. Our camp to Ohope would have to be one of the best camps I’ve ever been on.

Great post. I’m glad that you really enjoyed camp despite the accommodation! Did you only have one go at the high ropes? You are going to be doing some personal writing / recount about camp this week - describing how scary it was being up that high would be a great start.
