Punjabi March 27, 2008

On Sunday I went to the Gurdwara in Hamilton. A Gurdwara is like a church, but Indians go there. Even though I was born in New Zealand, when my mum, dad, little brother and I went, we decided, that my little brother and I should go to to Punjabi School. So we did. That was our first day there, and it was great! But I don’t think my brother enjoyed it as much as I did. Punjabi school is every Sunday, and it starts at 11:00am and finishes at 12:30pm. At Punjabi School, we learn how to write in Punjabi. On our first day there, my little brother and I learnt the Indian alphabet. The Indian alphabet has 35 letters in it, whereas the English alphabet has 26. I can speak in the Punjabi language, as it was the first language I ever learnt. But I can’t read or write in the Punjab language, but I am learning how to, and I am very excited. I have never learnt how to read or write in Punjabi, and on that first day that I did, I learnt how to say the whole alphabet! I am really proud of myself! Our teacher said that she was really impressed with me, and that I was the first person ever that she had taught, who learnt the whole Punjabi alphabet in one day! She also said that I am a very quick learner. I was really happy when she said that. I can only remember how to write the first few letters in order of the Punjabi alphabet. I also know a few more, but I don’t remember what one is what, and what order they can go in. Our Punjabi teacher also gives us homework to do. We have to finish it by the end of the week. This week the homework that I have to do, is I have to write the Punjabi alphabet in my book over and over again, so I can remember how to write each letter in order. I have written it 3 times so far, and I might write it a few more times. I know I still have long way to go, but I am going to try my best every time, and my goal is that I should be able to read and write in Punjabi by the next time I go to India.

Hi Naveen!
Goodluck in your homework, i hope you get better and better by the time.

Hi Naveen!
Wow! That must’ve been cool! I love going school. Before I used to go somewhere to learn every day but now I don’t go tutoring on Sunday’s anymore. But I go to Arabic School from 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday’s!
You know what?
Just reading your post about Panjabi school reminded me that I have tests at Arabic School tommorow. I have to go home and study, I don’t want to get bad results!
You know that my dad used to go Panjabi School when he was young?
My dad is from Bangladesh but he went with his uncle to India for 3 years. Bangladesh is really close to India. I know how to speak the language but I don’t know how to write. I know how to count upto ten and my mum insists that I learn my language!
You are really lucky! I went Bangladesh 3 years ago and it feels like it’s been decades!!
Hope to hear from you, Motahina
