On Sunday I went to the Gurdwara in Hamilton. A Gurdwara is like a church, but Indians go there. Even though I was born in New Zealand, when my mum, dad, little brother and I went, we decided, that my little brother and I should go to to Punjabi School. So we did. That was our first day there, and it was great! But I don’t think my brother enjoyed it as much as I did. Punjabi school is every Sunday, and it starts at 11:00am and finishes at 12:30pm. At Punjabi School, we learn how to write in Punjabi. On our first day there, my little brother and I learnt the Indian alphabet. The Indian alphabet has 35 letters in it, whereas the English alphabet has 26. I can speak in the Punjabi language, as it was the first language I ever learnt. But I can’t read or write in the Punjab language, but I am learning how to, and I am very excited. I have never learnt how to read or write in Punjabi, and on that first day that I did, I learnt how to say the whole alphabet! I am really proud of myself! Our teacher said that she was really impressed with me, and that I was the first person ever that she had taught, who learnt the whole Punjabi alphabet in one day! She also said that I am a very quick learner. I was really happy when she said that. I can only remember how to write the first few letters in order of the Punjabi alphabet. I also know a few more, but I don’t remember what one is what, and what order they can go in. Our Punjabi teacher also gives us homework to do. We have to finish it by the end of the week. This week the homework that I have to do, is I have to write the Punjabi alphabet in my book over and over again, so I can remember how to write each letter in order. I have written it 3 times so far, and I might write it a few more times. I know I still have long way to go, but I am going to try my best every time, and my goal is that I should be able to read and write in Punjabi by the next time I go to India.
